County Councillor for Harpenden North East
I’ve had the privilege to serve residents as the Hertfordshire County Councillor for Harpenden North East since 2013 and as Leader of the County Council since 2017.
Important elements of the role of a County Councillor are to be available for residents, be a local advocate and use locality budgets to support local priorities. Details of my budget allocations are here.
Hertfordshire has a justifiable reputation as a great place to live and bring up families. I am passionate that local growth builds on the strengths of the Hertfordshire economy, is sustainable, delivers good quality homes to meet local housing needs and is supported by the right infrastructure.
Locally, a key focus of mine has been securing the delivery of the new secondary school, the Katherine Warington School. Shortly to take its third cohort of students, it already has a strong reputation attracting more first preference applications than the 180 places available. It was also rewarding to support Roundwood Park School and Harpenden Colts to secure the 3G pitch – another important asset for the town.
I Chair the Hertfordshire Growth Board and sit on the board of the Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership and the Stevenage Development Board. I am also a Governor of the University of Hertfordshire.
Nationally, I am the Chairman of the County Councils Network – a cross party grouping for 36 county authorities, including Hertfordshire, that together serve 26 million residents.
My wife Claire and I have lived in Harpenden for 26 years and our children were educated at St Nicholas Primary and St George’s.
