Conservatives ran St Albans and District Council for 9 years. In that time, we did not increase council tax for 8 years; reduced net carbon in the District substantially; moved us into the top 10 recycling Districts in the Country; built 3 leisure centres on time and to budget; built the first Council houses in a generation and managed services so they were delivered timely and efficiently. We left the Council with millions of pounds in reserves.
Two years of Liberal Democrat control has destroyed that legacy.
Council tax is being increased at the highest level allowed and you are about to be charged for green waste. The commercial projects we left are all out of control, late and millions of pounds over budget. Key services are out of control. Subsidies to charities and for the most disadvantaged are threatened. Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrats are pouring hundreds of thousands of pounds into property developers’ pockets and millions into risky property speculations. They are blaming Covid for their failures. The government has covered around 75% of their losses due to Covid and the rest was easily covered by the reserves Conservatives left.
You now have a choice. If you want to keep taxes/charges down and get decent services and fair treatment for all - Vote Conservative.
- Stop the unfair green bin charges.
- Make the District greener and more sustainable.
- Stop risky property speculation.
- Help our High Streets and local businesses to thrive.
- Get Council services working properly.
- Support a speedy vaccine roll-out.
We need six more seats to take back control of the District Council. You have a great team of local candidates who are committed to delivering for our local communities. They are:
Paul Foster and Matt Stephens in Harpenden East;
Susan Griffiths in Harpenden North;
Mark Beashel and David Heritage in Harpenden South;
Lisa Scriven in Harpenden West;
Thomas Chapman in Redbourn; and
Gill Clark in Wheathampstead
You can find out more about them by clicking on their profiles on the left-hand side of this page. I hope that we can rely on your support on Thursday 6th May.
